We left Clarksville - didn't take the last train! but shot across country. So far these are the States we've DONE - New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky,Indianna, Illinois and Missouri WOW, can't believe it.
We reached 1000 miles near a sign for Possum Hill Store on the Interstate Highway 64. first mistake - following a recommendation by Lonely Planet Mag courtesy of Fi Leonard we made for a town called Lebanon, when we got there we were in Lebanon Illinois and we should have been in Lebanon Missouri, a simple mistake but 127 miles out!! We decided instead to go into St Louise because we could see the Arch (630 feet high) from miles away. We got there relatively easily for us and parked up. The Arch is amazing - I'm surprised it's not in the 1000 places to see before you die! It is huge and we wanted to ride to the top but the queue was really long so we walked across the road and booked into the Hyatt.
When we went back to the Arch there were still loads of people so we bought our tickets, having earlier bought a annual ticket for all the parks $80. We had $9 discount so already the ticket cost us just $71 - wow.
The trip to the top was epic, we had to squeeze into a small capsule and got hauled up to a platform inside the top of the arch. We took the obligatory pictures and came back down. The museum at the bottom told the tale of two men (Clark and Lewis) who left St. Louis in 1805 to settle the West and negotiate with the Indians, following the purchase of it from Napolean.
When in Lebanon we saw this crazy sign at MacDonalds
So now we've found Route 66 so here is where it starts for us - at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard! Hope we got room for it after the huge breakfast at the Hyatt
