Slot Canyons Which should never be missed!!!

From the start of the planning of this trip we really wanted to see slot canyons, they looked so cool in the travel books. The best one we could find was in Glen Canyon but we’ve gone so far West we would have to go East to find it!!! Then Mike realised that there were slot canyons in a little place called Escalante, along a dirt road called ‘Hole in the Wall’.

Well, we drove the 200 miles and turned off onto a DIRT road, having passed through the most pretty scenery you will ever see, rock colours which ranged from white to dark maroon.
We weren’t convinced they would be the business but we needn’t have worried!!!!
But first the adventure – only we can do it......

We drive 30 miles down the dirt road and pulled into a car park in the middle of no-where, walked off towards Dry River Gulch, when the heavens opened and a torrent erupted. We had no cover so, tootied down by the side of a rock and got SOAKED – THROUGH TO THE KNICKERS!!!

Never mind, we found the slot canyons and they were OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!

The first one was walk in, started about 3 foot wide and narrowed down to about a foot and a half. The canyon walls were about 30 foot high. The colours were fantastic, mainly pink and red walls with the odd yellow thrown in for good measure. Ffion nearly put her hand on a RATTLE SNAKE – it was small but certainly deadly!

We had to wade through water because of the rain and came out soaking wet and exhausted.

Should we look for the other canyon?

Next thing we found Spooky canyon – should we or shouldn’t we? Well, you know us. We climbed the wall and in we went. It was the most twisty , tight, wriggly tunnel you will ever find and the colours were even more intense than in Peekaboo canyon.

To top it all, when we were driving out of the car park, we slid into a huge pool of mud and had to get rocks to put under the tyres to get out.......we nearly didn’t make it! How could we call road side rescue to ‘Middle of No-where, Utah’?

We loved it – GOD BLESS AMERICA!
